Juan Ramon Quinones Perez passed away gently in his sleep on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. Juan was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico on November 9th, 1935 to Ramon Quinones and Felicita Perez. He moved to Spanish Harlem in Manhattan, New York on Saturday, June 30th, 1948…a memory he would recall to his family each year on that date. He met and married his wife, Eldemira (Delma) Morales, and together they raised two sons (William and Michael Cruz) and a daughter (Dr. Debra Quinones Moniz). An avid baseball fan, Juan played with the Pedro M. Caratini Athletic League in the Amateur, Class AA Division in the early 1960s. Juan worked in the New York City Garment District for several decades. He was employed by J.D. Trucking as a helper, driver, and dispatcher, retiring on New Year’s Eve of 1997. He and his wife, Delma, retired together to Puerto Rico in 1998, later returning to New York. Juan eventually moved to Westchester County, Cortlandt Manor where he lived with his daughter and son-in-law (Christopher Moniz) until his passing.
Family members referred to Juan as either Johnny or Tio (uncle) Johnny; however, his family in Puerto Rico nicknamed him Susin, or Suso for short. All who knew him can attest to the fact that Juan was a solid, steady man…dependable, loyal, and truly a person of his word. In his retired years, Juan was known for his strict discipline and steady routine. Juan loved his New York Mets, authentic Puerto Rican cuisine, and could recall the histories and music of his Hispanic culture. We are grateful to our Good Lord that Juan retained his independence and mobility until his passing. He functioned freely and efficiently for himself and enjoyed his life in the safety and comfort of his home, which he shared with his daughter Debra and son-in-law Christopher.
We will gather to pay our respects to Juan’s memory with an afternoon memorial on Sunday, February 18th, 2024, from 1:00-5:00 p.m. at the O’Mara & Carpentieri Funeral Home, located at 97 Broadway in Verplanck, New York 10596. Please, in lieu of flowers, we ask that you send a donation to one or all of the following charitable causes that Juan supported regularly; Memorial Sloane Kettering Cancer Research, Shriner’s Hospital, and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Juan was very dedicated to sending his financial support to these vital causes. It will be an honor for you to add your support in Juan’s name.
